How To Jump Start a Battery When It Dies
How To Jump Start a Battery When It Dies
Begin by bringing and aligning a running car near the vehicle with the dead battery and ensure that the cables are long enough to reach both batteries. Once you have the vehicles in position, turn off the running vehicle, pull out the jumper cables and run them towards the batteries while ensuring that the red and black clamps never touch. Once everything is ready, follow these steps:
- Connect the positive red cable to the dead battery's red positive terminal.
- Next, connect the other red positive red clamp to the live battery's positive terminal.
- Then, connect the black negative jumper clamp to the live battery's negative terminal.
- Once that's done, you can connect the last black negative clamp to an unpainted metal part on the dead vehicle's engine.
- Now that both batteries are connected, you need to start the vehicle with the live battery and wait around five minutes before attempting to start the dead vehicle.
- Once the vehicle starts, disconnect the cables in reverse, starting with the black negative clamp on the dead vehicle's engine, then the black negative on the live battery.
- Afterwards, take off the red positive on the live battery, and lastly, take off the red positive from the dead vehicle's battery.
Tips To Consider When Jump Starting a Dead Battery
Some tips to consider are don't crank the dead vehicle for longer than ten seconds at a time since it will overheat and possibly damage the starter, and if more power is required, you can rev the live vehicle up to 2,000 RPM. Also, be careful when handling jump-starting cables, ensure that they are untangled before use, and don't overextend the cables. Lastly, when the vehicle starts, take it for a 15-20 minute drive to recharge the battery, and if it fails to start afterwards, you should schedule an appointment to have your battery checked and replaced at our Service Centre.
